Rough was formed in late 2002 by Dave Allis, Scott Dodier, and Bryan Olivier. The initial intent of the band was to write and record original music in an acoustic rock style. This work lead to the 2003 CD Long Road. Beginning in 2004 Rough started playing local clubs a couple times a month mixing their original music with acoustic versions of popular songs.

As 2004 and 2005 rolled on Rough continued to gain a following through their club gigs and many private functions they played. But after the summer of 2005, decided to take a long break to reassess the all acoustic format. The band asked long-time friend and bass player Rob McGary to join them for a private party in February of 2006 playing a more electric format (Bryan switching from acoustic to electric guitar). That night made it clear that this was the new format for the Rough Cover band and beginning in June, 2006 the first Rough Summer Cover Tour got underway at local clubs and private parties playing some of the same songs, but also with lots of new additions that the new format allowed.

Rough continues to write and record original music as well, but given the gig schedule, their time in the studio writing and recording has been slow and sporadic.
